Located 25 km northwest of Broken Hill, Silverton has various historic buildings constructed in the 19th century, some of which have been restored as museums and galleries. With the discovery of silver in 1875, the population peaked at about 3,000 late in that decade. When the precious metal ran out, miners transferred to Broken Hill, taking many of the buildings with them.
The dramatic natural scenery and changes of light and colour have also made this area in outback NSW popular with artists. Many of the so-called Brushmen of the Bush paint and sell their art in Silverton. A two-hour walking trail takes in the town's sights and historic buildings, and the Silverton Hotel.
