Reserve tickets for a show at Belvoir Street Theatre in Surry Hills, where Oscar winners Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchett have performed. You’ll find numerous great restaurants, pubs and small bars in this vibrant neighbourhood. The Seymour Centre in Chippendale is another theatre in inner city Sydney.
Travel by train or bus from the city centre to Newtown, another creative hub, for the King Street Theatre and funky cafés, restaurants and people. Or go to Kings Cross for the Griffin Theatre Company. Stroll along Balmain’s bustling Darling Street to browse in book stores and boutiques and enjoy lunch in one of many historic pubs.

Nearby, among Potts Point’s art deco buildings, is one of Sydney’s best new dining precincts where you’ll find Monopole, Ms G’s, Billy Kwong and The Apollo. On Saturdays go shopping at the Kings Cross Organic Food and Farmers Markets, near the landmark El Alamein Memorial Fountain, which is shaped like a giant dandelion.
From Potts Point, stroll to stylish restaurants such as Otto Ristorante on Woolloomooloo Wharf, one of the world’s longest timber wharfs. Accommodation is available on the wharf.
You can saunter from the wharf to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, a promontory with glorious harbour views, and then to the Royal Botanic Garden and the Sydney Opera House.
