About Sydney’s south

Australia’s oldest national park is in Sydney’s south. Established in 1879, the Royal National Park has many natural attractions. You’ll discover rainforests, woodlands and estuaries or you can rent a kayak and paddle on tranquil waterways.

The pretty bayside village of Bundeena is the gateway to the park. To get to Bundeena, travel from the city centre by train for an hour to Cronulla, a beachside community with a popular surf beach. You’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants in Cronulla.

You can also learn to surf at the Cronulla Surf Academy and Cronulla Surf School. On the wharf near the train station is Cronulla Ferries, which has daily services to Bundeena. The ferry trip takes about 30 minutes.

Join the Jibbon Aboriginal Tour in the Royal National Park, which is among the oldest national parks in the world. You’ll learn about Aboriginal culture and native plants and animals, and see ancient rock carvings.

Also in Sydney’s south is Kamay Botany Bay National Park, where Captain James Cook first set foot on Australian soil in 1770. These days, you can get on a bus near Cronulla train station to visit Kurnell.
